We all wish our horses would come up to us with a smile on their face like this first little mare. But more often than not our horses would rather stay with their herd.
This is a common and normal situation. Using the same techniques a herd leader would use makes catching a reluctant horse a whole lot easier. After realizing this mare was not going to catch up I dropped the first mare and concentrated on putting myself between Miss Reluctant and the herd. Once she realized I had taken charge of the herd she turned and faced me to ask what she should do to be able to remain with the herd. Mission accomplished!
