New Book: Training for Safety

I am very pleased to announce the publication of Training for Safety. This is a book compiled from a series of driving training articles that ran in Rural Heritage Magazine in 2010 and 2011. Mischka Press has assembled the original articles into a lovely full color book that offers a range of exercises to educate horse and driver with safety as a priority. Exercises include learning to plan and prepare for turns, crossing scary surfaces, and learning to give to pressure, and many others.

Each chapter is illustrated with color photos featuring myself or students demonstrating the steps to take, as well as problems that might come up.

Think Harmony With Horses - Ray Hunt

I don't loan this book out very often because I usually have a hard time getting it back! Like any book pertaining to Natural Horsemanship that is worth it's salt, "Think Harmony With Horses" is a sharing of knowledge by one of the Masters, Ray Hunt. It was Ray that taught me where I needed to go with a horse but even more importantly when to back off. If you are a serious student of horsemanship and have a desire to share the insights of a man who truly understood horses then make this book part your library. You will go back to it time and time again and get more out of it each time you do.

The Revolution in Horsemanship - by Robert Miller

This book was a gift from an avid student of mine who had "discovered" natural horsemanship. Anyone interested in or thinking about changing their approach to horses or searching for a more solid understanding of them would benefit from this book. It helps the reader see horsemanship as a way of life, as an approach to life from the perspective of those who have made their life with horses. It helps define horsemanship as a skill rather than a discipline or new trend. I found it to be well written, well rounded, and thoroughly researched. An excellent read for those looking to understand the meaning and roots of horsemanship and it's evolution to present day.

True Horsemanship Through Feel - by Bill Dorrance

I honestly do not think there is a question about horses, horse training, or horse behavior you would not find the answer to in this book. It is my number one recommendation for anyone with a desire to truly understand horses. It is not an easy read or an instruction manual rather more a lifetime reference for those who choose to make horses a part of their lives. I encourage every student in my program to use this book. Note I said use, not read, as I still will refer back to this book to help a student understand the whys and whats of their work with their horses.This is a must have for the serious student of horsemanship.

True Unity - by Tom Dorrance

True horsemen are hard to find, and as some have mentioned, even harder to understand at times. If you are serious about learning the art of horsemanship and want to have the deep understanding of the horse it takes to do so this is one of only a handful of books I recommend. It is not a riding manual, a quick fix for horse problems, or a style even of horse training and communication between horse and human. It is more a sharing of experience and knowledge to help the student of horsemanship develop a way of thinking and approach which opens up the door for communication with the horse.
